My Diary...

return to my main page return to the seahorses stuff

April 24, 2001
Well this is my first plublished entry in the next I will try to bring you up to speed. Today, well actually last night I finally settled on a 10 gallon Hex. It's a bit deeper then I wanted for dwarf seahorses but hopefully It will be ok.
I have mixed feelings about filtering. The seahorse list people are kind of torn. Power filter or no power filter. Should I use only a sponge? with the return so high Up I am hoping that I will be able to use the biowheel mini. This aquarium is intended to replace the Eclipse 3 which used a biowheel (remarkably simular in size) to aid in biological filtration. But the speed on the Eclipse 3 is much slower then what the Mini should be. I am going to try to baffle the return a bit, wish Marineland had made the biowheels adjustable as to water speed . We will see.
The saga of Ozzie and Harriet. My OR seahorses , a pair of Mustangs were going thru this breeding dance like you would not believe. I am not particuarly a vouyier but these fish are like rabbits. I have not actually seen an exchange of eggs but every thing else seems in order. No one knows for sure the gestation peroid is or exactly how many babies they might have. (Frankly no one knows exactly what speci they are.) so I am marking the calandar and we will soon see. Atleast for my pair. At this point I hope to get about 30 babies to raise, any more will have to be sacrofised unless i can find any one local to try to raise them.
The Neon Gobies.: Well, about a week ago I got some neon gobies (2) to add to the OR's tank. When they arrived they were much smaller then I had expected. They are just babies, hopefully that will allow them time to maybe form a pair. Right now that seems unlikely they dive bomb each other. The day after they arrived I noticed that they had Ich or perhaps just some slime or something. The Local petshop owner said this was normal and that they should clean each other as they settle in the tank. Today I saw atleast one and it showed little or no ich or what ever bothered it. At feeding time I saw them both. There was less agresion but still some dive bombing.
Peppermint Shrimp: We also got a pair, or atleast 2, Peppermint Shrimp. I hope these are the 'nice' kind. Saw them an day 2 but not sense. They are large and I hope that they are not being harmed.
Cleanup Crew: Consist of about 15 mixed types of hermit crabs, and 15 (if they are all there) mixed sea snails. Today I notices something odd, and a few days ago to. Today one of the smaller hermits actually hitched a ride on one of the OR Horses. He / she (the seahorse) did not particarly like it and took a bit of time getting it off. A few days ago I noticed while feeding one of the hermits ran accross the females tail... the female often just rests her uncurled tail as she grabbs food. In this case I know the hermit was not targeting the seahorse because it was clearly running to get it's share of mysis. in the other case, I don't know. I certainly intend to watch more closely.
Corals/Gorgons/Xenia/other live stuff I can see: The zena keeps moving - then again my brother keeps re arranging the live rock. To My great dismay. A week ago I got 2 coral pieces. One a kind of mushroom type one - I am told that it will tollerate low light. The other a kind of SpS called a finger. neither seems to be bothered being in the tank. Now the Gorgon. Quite often - particuarly in their maiting rituals they grasp ahold of it. I hope they are not doing it harm. I have had one of them hitch to my finger. Not a light squeeze. .. I am wondering if it would do ok in the Dwarfs.
This and that: Well I figured I'd use this last part for more general observations. One is I must do water changes. I am concerned about the gravel and also the loss of water due to evapoartion.I have a makeup line of sorts so I try to get tom to top off when ever he is willing. Some list people are considering getting skimmers. I am not sure its wize and I am near my limit (fincially) so I don't know what to do. Perhaps it might be my birthday present. but that was on the 10th (april) then I never really got one this year, then again what were the ORhorses , but a birthday present. Pondering.
The Dwarf tank is paid for. At this point we only need gravel (if were getting gravel) and a therometer. Every thing else is here.. Must get started. I ordered (I know another $60) Hopefully with a dozen (and my still doing well 3 or 4 adults from the beginning of the month) or so we will see some breeding there as well.
Wish me luck. Pictures coming soon. Actually got out 4 times this month. Wheelchairs are hell but live is getting sweet again.
Remember I am working on a little book... please read it and send me your comments.
till next week... Happy fishkeeping/
